If there is one hike that perfectly captures the dramatic beauty of the Swiss Alps, it is the panorama trail above Oeschinensee. Nestled in the Bernese Oberland above the village of Kandersteg, this glacial lake is famous for its vibrant turquoise water framed by the sheer rock faces of the Blüemlisalp massif.
While many visitors walk the flat path directly to the lakeshore, the true magic of Oeschinensee is found higher up. The hike to the Blümlisalphütte mountain hut—takes you along the cliffs high above the water, offering aerial views that look entirely photoshopped.
How to Get to Kandersteg and Oeschinensee
Reaching this alpine paradise is straightforward thanks to Switzerland’s incredibly efficient transport network. Your first destination is the village of Kandersteg.
1. Getting to Kandersteg
By Train (The Easiest Option): Kandersteg is well-connected by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB). The RegioExpress Lötschberger train runs directly through this valley, offering massive panoramic windows for the journey.
- From Bern: ~1 hour (direct)
- From Interlaken: ~45 minutes (transfer in Spiez)
- From Zurich: ~2 hours (transfer in Bern)
By Car: If you are road-tripping, Kandersteg is easily accessible via the A6 motorway (exit at Spiez, then follow the main road into the Kander Valley).
- Parking: Navigate directly to the Oeschinensee Gondola Valley Station. There is a large paid parking lot right at the cable car base. Pro tip: Arrive before 9:00 AM during peak summer months, as the lot fills up extremely fast.
2. Kandersteg to the Oeschinensee Gondola
If you arrive by train, you have two options to reach the gondola station:
- Walk: It is a flat, scenic 15-minute walk through the village. Just follow the yellow signs for “Oeschinensee.”
- Local Bus: If you want to save your legs, hop on the local Bus 242 right outside the train station, which drops you off directly at the gondola base in about 5 minutes.
3. Taking the Gondola Up the Mountain
To reach the actual trailhead, purchase a ticket for the Oeschinensee cable car.
- The ride takes about 10 minutes, whisking you up to the mountain station at 1,680 meters.
- Discounts: If you hold a Swiss Travel Pass, Swiss Half Fare Card, or GA Travelcard, you get 50% off your gondola ticket.
- Alternative (Hiking Up): If you want to skip the gondola entirely and save money, you can hike from Kandersteg village up to the lake. This adds about 1 to 1.5 hours of steep, uphill walking (approx. 500m elevation gain) before you even start the main panorama loop.
Once you exit the gondola at the top station, you have arrived at the trailhead! Follow the yellow signs pointing left toward Heuberg , Oberbergli and Blümlisalphütte to start your ascent.
Best Time to Hike
The Oeschinensee Panorama Trail is typically open from mid-June through late October.
- June/July: The waterfalls feeding the lake are at their strongest due to snowmelt, and the alpine wildflowers are in full bloom.
- September/October: The summer crowds thin out, the air is crisp, and the surrounding larch trees turn a brilliant gold.
Time of Day: This is one of Switzerland’s most popular hikes. To experience the trail in peace and get the best lighting for photography, catch the very first gondola of the day (usually around 8:30 AM). By noon, the narrow cliffside paths can become heavily congested.
Essential Packing List
- Sturdy Hiking Boots: Leave the sneakers at home. The descent from Oberbergli is rugged and slippery, requiring good ankle support and grip.
- Layers: Alpine weather changes rapidly. It may be freezing when you start in the morning and blazing hot by the time you reach the lake. Pack a breathable base layer and a windproof shell.
- Sun Protection: The entire hike is exposed to the sun. Bring high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
- Water and Snacks: While you can buy food at the huts, always carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person.
